A Darker Shade of Magic BY: VE SCHWAB

I recently read the wonderful VE Schwab, going into this I was expecting so much from this book because of the novel Vicious I read early last year. As I said this book was not as great as Vicious but yet another stunner from VE!

Plot:(Goodreads.com)
Kell is one of the last Travelers—rare magicians who choose a parallel universe to visit.

Grey London is dirty, boring, lacks magic, ruled by mad King George. Red London is where life and magic are revered, and the Maresh Dynasty presides over a flourishing empire. White London is ruled by whoever has murdered their way to the throne. People fight to control magic, and the magic fights back, draining the city to its very bones. Once there was Black London - but no one speaks of that now.

Officially, Kell is the Red Traveler, personal ambassador and adopted Prince of Red London, carrying the monthly correspondences between royals of each London. Unofficially, Kell smuggles for those willing to pay for even a glimpse of a world they’ll never see. This dangerous hobby sets him up for accidental treason. Fleeing into Grey London, Kell runs afoul of Delilah Bard, a cut-purse with lofty aspirations. She robs him, saves him from a dangerous enemy, then forces him to another world for her 'proper adventure'.

But perilous magic is afoot, and treachery lurks at every turn. To save all of the worlds, Kell and Lila will first need to stay alive — trickier than they hoped.

Characters:
Kell: He is a great multifaceted character, he is a great roll model for Lila who has become solely dependant on him through the course of the book. Character development with Kell is good, however not as good as Vicious's characters; but he has a great open mind when it comes to magic even though it could kill everyone.
Leila: She is a spunky pirate orphan who falls into the path of Kell as she has pickpocketed a very dangerous item. She has many more layers than Kell did, she in a nut shell is snarky, witty, and brutal, just the kind of characters I love.
Dane Twins: Wonderfully Wicked! Favorite characters!!!!

General thoughts: I read this along with Kitty G on Youtube and we both had a similar feeling towards the novel, and that was we wished that some of the ideas be fleshed out more, for instance how exactly they travel through worlds, and battle scenes. However other than that I would say that it is a great first attempt into fantasy!
